Trainee Quantity Surveyor
Trainee Quantity Surveyor
John Flowers Ltd | Washington, North East England
Competitive salary
Do you have experience in buying, procurement, construction or commercial administration and want to develop a career in quantity surveying? Or are you a recent graduate looking for an opportunity to put your skills into practice?
John Flowers Ltd is looking for a Trainee Quantity Surveyor to join our growing commercial team. We welcome applications from people with relevant transferable skills, as well as those working towards a qualification in quantity surveying.
You don’t need previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor. We’re looking for someone with strong numerical and organisational skills, a practical approach and a willingness to learn.
About the role
Reporting to the Commercial Manager, you’ll work alongside our commercial, operations and finance teams. Through practical experience and guidance from the team, you’ll learn how to support the commercial management of construction projects.
As your knowledge and confidence grow, you’ll become involved in:
- Preparing valuations and payment applications.
- Tracking project costs, budgets and procurement schedules.
- Obtaining and comparing supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Preparing orders and checking invoices and payment records.
- Assessing variations and changes to project costs.
- Maintaining accurate records and supporting project reporting.
You won’t be expected to arrive knowing how to carry out every task—we’re interested in your potential to develop.
Who we’d like to hear from
Your experience could come from buying, procurement, construction sales, estimating, commercial administration, surveying, or site and project coordination.
For example, if you have purchased construction materials, raised purchase orders, managed stock, checked invoices or resolved supplier queries, you may already have skills that would provide a useful foundation for this role.
We also welcome recent graduates who can demonstrate strong numerical and organisational skills and an interest in commercial construction.
Whether you’re starting your career or looking to move into quantity surveying from another role, we’d like to hear from you.
What matters most
- Confidence working with numbers, spreadsheets and accurate records.
- Good Excel and general IT skills.
- Organisation and attention to detail.
- Clear communication and a proactive, reliable approach.
- A willingness to learn and build a career in construction.
Previous QS experience or a QS qualification would be useful, but neither is essential. Experience with construction materials, joinery, roofline, external works or relevant commercial software would also be helpful.
What you’ll get
- Competitive salary.
- Performance-related bonus.
- Pension scheme.
- A clear progression pathway to Quantity Surveyor or Contracts Manager.
- Support for professional development, including qualifications or chartership.
